Signal Hill Monument
The first America’s battlefield telecommunication is marked by this monument. It is a monument located in Manassas Park that commemorates veterans of America’s Confederate signal who were the first to raise the bonnie white flag in battle. The bonnie white flag has the Crimson Square. The Signal Hill Monument is one of Manassas’s unique elements and it gives an insight of the communication that occurred on July 1861 at 8:45 during the Battle of the First Manassas (Bull Run). The first America’s battlefield telecommunication was sent from the hilltop by Capt. E.P. Alexander, CSA. The telecommunication said: Look out for your left, you are turned. This was a massage sent to Col. Evans that warned him of flank march by Brig. Gen. McDowell’s and by heeding to this message; a looming defeat was quickly turned into a crucial victory. This was the first instance when wig-wag signals were used during wartime. The victory achieved through this communication secured a permanent place in the ranks of modern armies for the signal corps.
